“And the winner is …”
Each year, the widely respected Stockholm International Peace Research Institute publishes estimates of international defense spending. The last complete year, 2013, showed: The U.S. $ 640.2 billion; China $ 188.5 billion; and Russia $ 87.8 billion. The U.S. spends almost two-and-a-half times what our “enemies” spend, but even that doesn’t satisfy the hawks in Washington. President Obama is asking for more than $ 1 trillion for our 2015 “national security related” programs.

That doesn’t sound like very much compared to previous months, and one of the reasons is that the May awards for a number of agencies have been conveniently unannounced. Awards to the Missile Defense Agency, the Coast Guard, Washington Headquarters Services, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency – to name just a few – remained unpublished. The main reason though, as we discussed in Vol. XXXIX, Art. 23, is that the DoD awards are given out with no fanfare at all.
